Americorps and Amy Beihl School Volunteer at the AOC for Martin Luther King Day!

This past Monday, January 17th was a national holiday for most people. Not for the Albuquerque Opportunity Center, nor for an amazing group of volunteers from the AmeriCorps and students from Amy Beihl High School!  Monday saw over 30 people come to volunteer at the shelter, all committed to making a difference in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.  What a great way to celebrate Martin Luther King’s legacy! These volunteers scrubbed nightstands and bed frames for the 74 men that stay here every night. They also washed and painted walls, cleaned up our landscaped areas, picked up garbage and raked the gardens.  The students had so many thoughtful, intelligent questions about the work we do, and how better to get involved. They left here with a much richer understanding of the causes of homelessness and it’s effects on the greater community. We are extremely grateful for all of these volunteers from AmeriCorps and Amy Beihl High School. We feel proud that they chose to give their time and energy to the Albuquerque Opportunity Center. Thank You,  Everyone!
