The Albuquerque Opportunity Center has 6 beds dedicated to respite care for homeless men, 18 years and older. The men accepted into the program must have an injury or illness that is acute and they must be ambulatory. We cannot accept chronic ailments or disabilities. Here in the Respite Care Program, we give these men a warm bed to sleep in 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They have access night and day to showers, three meals a day, clean clothes, linens, basic medical supplies and most importantly, a safe place to recover. Keeping medical appointments is key to recovery from any illness or injury; A.O.C has a solid team of volunteer drivers that take Respite residents to their appointments Monday- Friday.
A.O.C also hosts medical respite rounding through the UNM College of Medicine- enabling medical, nursing and pharmacy students the ability to meet with the Respite residents 2-3 times a week. In addition to this we also have a volunteer nurse coming every weekend to visit with the men. A.O.C is the only shelter that allows the residents to bring O2 (oxygen) into their facility.
Referrals are made in by medical facilities and Albuquerque Healthcare for the Homeless only. If you have questions, feel free to contact Jessica Casey, Respite Care Director
